Dirtied hazes loom over the skies

たむろする若衆 (tamuro suru wakashuu)

Young men loitering about

紫煙を燻らせて眼は虚ろ (shien wo kuyurasete – manako wa utsuro)

Smoking mauve fumes, their eyes hollow

岡っ引きバビロン　弱き者abandon (okappiki babylon – yowaki mono abandon)

Thief-snatchers’ Babylon – The weak ones to abandon

花街人まちまち　寂れてslow down (hanamachi bito machimachi – sabirete slow down)

Red-lights over sundries of people – Desolate and slow down

賭博構想　お上は焦燥 (tobaku kousou – okami wa shousou)

A scheme of gambling, the emperor is anxious

洒落では済まぬお目こぼし横行 (share dewa sumanu – omekoboshi oukou)
